Cheshire Crime ....... History

Dave Owens crime reduction officer ….Instead of the usual crime reduction message, I thought I’d delve back about 100 years ago to give you a flavour of the Cheshire Constabulary then.

 

Chester Police had a strength of 52 officers.  A constable was paid between 24 shillings and 30 shillings a week, (£1.20 / £1.50) and was allowed 52 rest days a year.  Their colleagues up the road in Birkenhead were earning between 25shillings and  7 pence and 33 shillings a week but only had 26 days off a year.

 

Going back even further, on a report about wreckers (The practice of lighting false beacons to entice ships to wreck on the shore and then loot the contents), “Mr. Dowling, the commissioner of the Liverpool police said that, in Cheshire wrecking was so firmly established as an occupation that the parish constables never interfered with those engaged in it”.
